BSIFS 2025 – Big Science Industry Forum Spain

The Big Science Industry Forum Spain (BSIFS2025), organised by CDTI, INDUCIENCIA, and INEUSTAR, is the first Spanish forum focused on the Big Science industry. Its goal is to strengthen Spain’s Big Science sector and showcase it as a driver of economic growth. The two-day event fosters connections among the science industry, research groups, and national research infrastructures, and presents upcoming procurements and technological trends in the field. The forum includes networking opportunities, an exhibition, and one-on-one meetings. IOD 2025 – Industrial Opportunity Days, June 12 – 13, 2025, Turin (Italy) | National Event

The Industrial Opportunity Days (IOD) take place in Turin on June 12-13, 2025, at the International Training Centre of the International Labour Organization. Organized by ILO Network Italia and CEI Piemonte, with the support of the Turin Chamber of Commerce, the event is aimed at small and medium-sized Italian enterprises, with the goal of fostering their involvement in European Big Science programs, expanding skills, markets, and innovation opportunities. The investment programs of major European and Italian scientific laboratories are presented, along with a special session on the development of nuclear energy, both in the fields of fission and fusion. One of the presentations during the IOD event will be dedicated to Einstein Telescope and will include an update to businesses on the status of the project and prospects for industrial involvement.

IUVSTA WORKSHOP 102: Ultra Clean Vacuum, February 3 – 6, 2025, Delft (Netherlands) | International Event

The IUVSTA workshop on ultra-clean vacuum took place on February 3-6, 2025, in Delft, The Netherlands. This 4-day event provided an opportunity to learn about the latest advancements in vacuum technology, essential for sectors like semiconductors, space exploration, and large scientific facilities such as CERN and the Einstein Telescope. Attendees had the chance to hear from leading experts, participate in networking sessions, and engage in breakout discussions on topics like contamination control, vacuum systems, and equipment performance. A key focus was the Einstein Telescope, with Stefan Hanke (Karlsruhe Institute of Technology) and Luisa Spallino (INFN) discussing the challenges related to the stringent vacuum requirements for the beam pipe and mirrors operating at cryogenic temperatures, which are essential for ensuring the sensitivity and performance of this next-generation gravitational wave observatory. The event also included informal activities to foster connections and provide a well-rounded experience. The workshop was organised by TNO and the Dutch Vacuum Society (NEVAC).

Einstein Telescope at BSBF2024, October 1- 4, 2024 – Trieste (Italy) | International Event

The Einstein Telescope (ET) is prominently featured at the event, highlighted by Italy’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Antonio Tajani, and delegate Anna Maria Bernini. Key figures, including INAF President Roberto Ragazzoni, INFN President Antonio Zoccoli, and Nikhef’s outgoing director Stan Bentvelsen, deliver the sole scientific presentation in the plenary session, emphasizing ET’s significance. ET’s presence in three exhibition spaces draws strong interest from leading companies, showcasing the vital link between fundamental science, innovation, and economic growth. The event successfully brought together 1,300 delegates from over 500 organizations across 32 countries, with 245 exhibitors and 14 national pavilions.

Einstein Telescope Project Seminar, December 11, 2024, Turin (Italy) | National Event

A presentation on the Einstein Telescope (ET) project was held in Turin, focusing on Italy’s proposal to host the site in Sardinia. The event details ET’s characteristics, the current status of the candidacy, and the opportunities for Italian businesses in sectors such as large infrastructures, precision mechanics, and high-tech components. ET, a third-generation gravitational wave detector, offers a much higher sensitivity than current instruments, allowing for unprecedented scientific discoveries. Italy is co-leading the project, with strong institutional support from the government, the Ministry of University and Research, and regional authorities. The event also included discussions on the procurement process and the involvement of Italian companies in the construction and technological development of the infrastructure.

Webinar: Vacuum pipe – The Pilot Sector, December 19, 2023 | International Event

The vacuum arm system of the Einstein Telescope (ET) gravitational wave interferometer will probably be the world’s largest ultra-high vacuum (UHV) system for a long time to come (120 km). For a gravitational wave interferometer like ET, the cost is important and proportional to its length. The construction of a vacuum system of this size requires an enormous effort to optimise the choice of materials, manufacturing processes and tube treatments to reduce costs, as it is estimated to account for 1/3 of the total cost of ET. For the construction of a pilot sector under the leadership of CERN, industrial partners are being sought for the production of ultra-high vacuum (UHV) tubes, based on the solution adopted for the VIRGO observatory (smooth pipe) and corrugated tubes compatible with high vacuum. The webinar presented the technical challenges related to the vacuum tube manufacturing.
