The ET Blue Book has been published

The Blue Book "The Science of the Einstein Telescope" has been published today on arXiv. This is a milestone paper of the Einstein Telescope Collaboration and a major deliverable of the European project - "Preparatory Phase for the Einstein Telescope Gravitational Wave Observatory". Over 300 key contributors have worked on this comprehensive ~550-page study, the result of dedicated efforts by the ET Observational Science Board.

This document presents a detailed exploration of the science case for ET, offering state-of-the-art predictions for its capabilities in both proposed configurations: a single-site triangular observatory and a system of two L-shaped detectors.

It explores ET’s potential impact across a wide range of fields:

  • Fundamental physics
  • Cosmology & the early Universe
  • Astrophysics of compact objects
  • Matter under extreme conditions
  • Stellar collapse dynamics
  • Advancements in waveform modelling
  • Tools developed within the ETC
  • Data analysis challenges

“The Science of the Einstein Telescope” also highlights multi-messenger astronomy and the synergies between ET and other gravitational-wave observatories – both ground-based and space-borne – paving the way for groundbreaking discoveries in fundamental physics, astrophysics and cosmology.
