Candidate locations
It has yet to be decided where the underground Einstein Telescope will be built. At this moment, there are three official candidate locations:
Teams of all three locations are working on feasibility and preparatory studies. The activities include investigating the subsurface and economic impact, working on forming host consortia and securing finances, and engaging with communities, regional and national stakeholders.

The Euregio Meuse-Rhine is the border area of the Netherlands, Belgium and Germany. The candidate site is located in the area between the cities of Maastricht, Liège and Aachen. The ‘EMR consortium’ has developed their own logo and communication channels to connect to communities and stakeholders. Landscape of the Euregio Meuse-Rhine
The area of interest in Italy – the Sos Enattos area – is located on the island of Sardinia. More specifically, the candidate site lies in the island’s inland area, between the municipalities of Lula, Bitti and Onanì. The ‘Italian candidacy’ has developed their own logo and communication channels to connect to communities and stakeholders. Lusatia is located in Saxony in the east of Germany. The Lusatia site is the ‘youngest’ candidate location: it became an official candidate site in 2025. The ‘Lusatia consortium’ has developed their own logo and communication channels to connect to communities and stakeholders.
